(Just to mention it, I'm not good at telling stories from memory so this may vary a bit from what happened really but in the core it'll be alright ^^ Also forgive me any fictional decorations.)

His name was Cepheus and he was old. His senses where duller than they were ages before and his muscles had become weaker in the last few months. Also his pack had developed some cruel attitude against him, leaving his tired body behind, so he finally had stopped following them a few days ago.

Today was the first day of Winter, a cold, snowy day with a tasty carcass and a cool smelling pond next to the still sleeping wolf male. The old wolf woke up late today - already noon with the sun high on the sky, though not warming at all - and stood up, streching and yawning, nearly every joint creaked somewhat when he moved. The carcass wouldn't last for much longer, that was sure. He would have to go hunting soon, but for now it was enough to satisfy his hunger. Age makes sleepy so he took another nap after his tummy was filled.

It was evening when he awoke again. Something, some noise, had disturbed his sleep. A breaking stick, some sour stench mixed with tabakko and metal, his inner voice told him, that a human must be near. Cepheus didn't wait long enough to see this hunter. He took off as fast as his fragile legs could and so he soon was out of danger. His breath went faster than his heart could beat so he had to stop to regain some energy. The male didn't even notice night falling so he stared half blind up to the crescent moon. He was cold, hungry and thirsty so he lowered his head and at least stilled his need for water by eating snow. A sudden chill and some hard heartbeat made him sit down and he suddenly felt even older than before. Would he live to the new spring to feel the warmth of the sun again? He had some serious doubts about this and let out a lonely howl. Not to mention that nobody did answer, since his pack was very far away and surely already asleep and also, coming to think about it, why would they tend to him ANYWAY? He was of no use to the pack anymore so they abandoned him, he realized. With that sad thoughts he went asleep once again...

... And he didn't awake this time ...

That's really sad. :-/ But unfortunately realistic. You've described the scene really well, and there were some nice touches like the half-blind staring up at the moon. It makes it more fun to read. :-) He died in his sleep... man...

How old was Cepheus, in the end?

Well.. he died with 7 years and 9 months.
I replayed it and the second time he didn't even die with 8 years...

Maybe I'm gonna rename him and write another story from it ^^ But thanks everyone, thanks for the good critics.
